Difficult life of the amateur photographer pt. I - The Reason

Posted on March 29th, 2007

So, I’d like to find a model. Girl, probably visually interesting (it does not mean “a pretty chick”) experienced (or not) - but mostly: cooperative. Open minded and honest. Naturally, I am not in the position to pay a lot of money for the modelling service, so I am going down with the road of TFP. There’s a lot of pretty girls starting the career in the modelling industry, you’d think, so what is the problem?

I remember my days in Poland - finding a proper person there was not difficult at all. Few portals for photo models, one evening spend on the research and: bang! Somebody has been found, happy to help and interested in cooperation. First meeting in the cafeteria, session, cd’s and prints. Done. Mission accomplished. Here, in the UK it is slightly different. For me, being used to the Eastern European type of appearance (figure, hair colour, face shape) it can be very complicated. I don’t want to say, that there’s not enough nice and good looking girls in the UK, but certainly the market is more rich and - therefore - demanding in the financial terms. Which is fair, but now I realise how expensive photography is. I’d better stick to landscapes and animals. Lol. No, I won’t.

I will progress and I will find more people willing to spend some time with me on our portfolios. The only thing is that… I have no idea how to approach this difficult subject. :) I will keep you updated with my inventions on this matter. I need to turn around and to leave the usual strategies which I’ve been using with a great success in Poland. Time to get uk-nized :)

One more thing’s striking my mind: somehow I see that people are afraid of the cameras here. Especially those, who are looking better than the average Joe or Mary. A phobia. But this is the subject for different post.

I think that the seamy side of amateur photography has polluted attitudes here. If you ask a girl if you can take some modelling photos, unless she is semi-serious about entering the field, she is likely to run a mile, or err take all her clothes off and pout a lot.

I wonder if places like the university Drama school might offer some free material? Girls, and boys for that matter who would like to try their hand at the art of modelling, taking it seriously, and benefitting from decent portfolio shots…
